35 Years of Hit Music

Posted on by D.

In June of 1986 a young seventeen year old boy was in his South Philadelphia home writing lyrics to a composition that was created by a husband and wife songwriting duo by the name of Gabriel and Annette Hardeman. The young boy is a grown man now, some thirty five years later by the name of G Syier Hawkins Brown, the song.... “This Is The Last Time” performed by the late Teddy Pendergrass, the song was on Teddy’s “Joy” LP, the Grammy award winning album, released in 1988 on Elecktra Asylum records. This was just the beginning. Syier’s next writing experience with the Hardemans’ was “Love Under New Management” a R&B classic performed by Miki Howard and was a staple on R&B radio stations at the number 1 spot for over sixteen weeks. Syier’s debut as a producer in 1994 landing him a Grammy award winning single with the global club hit “Show Me Love” for New York based club diva Robin S., and the hits just kept on coming. As a sought after writer and producer SYIER was contracted to work with artist across the music spectrum. His uncle the late Edwin Hawkins the legendary Godfather of contemporary gospel music called on his nephew’s skills for the track “Come to Jesus” that was first performed by the Clark Sisters for a David E Tolbert stage play, God Is Trying To Tell You Something. Syier’s pin and production skills can be found on tracks by; Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Maxwell, 2Pac, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Vivian Green, Ledisi, Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston just to name a few. The ZOAH MUSIC HOUSE Publishing catalog is a multi million dollar publishing house owned by G Syier Hawkins Brown and the bulk of the publishing revenue derived from not only works by Syier, but the publishing catalog also owns a portion of songs from the Edwin Hawkins Music catalog such as the very popular “Oh Happy Day”, “Oooh Child” and the gospel classic by the Edwin Hawkins Singers “Oh Children” which has been sampled by Rap Giants Jay Z and Kanye West in 2015 by Jay Z and again in 2018 by West. In 2019 Syier’s music publishing company ZOAH Music House received the prestigious ASCAP Independent Publisher of the year award with over $2M in publishing royalties earned in a one year period. The American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers ( ASCAP) proudly salute our Writer/Publisher member, Dr. G Syier Hawkins Brown, PhD. for 35 years of music creating and excellence.
